Access to Basic Toilet Facilities on the Rise

Basic sanitation features sanitary or pour flush which are connected to piped sewer system, septic or pit latrines with improved ventilation. The composting toilet can reduce water usage and decompose human waste, reducing the threat to the environment or health. Basic sanitation is not shared with other households, offers privacy and improves quality of life by providing a sense of security to many.

With sanitation problems rampant across the country, there needs to be access to basic facilities and hygiene services. Basic sanitation is equipped with taps and running water facilities. The toilets are maintained by individuals in a household. People mainly living in urban households, in flats or apartments, have basic sanitation coverage.

According to JMP 2019, 79 million people in Bangladesh have a decent toilet of their own and since 2000, the number of people with a decent toilet of their own has increased by 131%.

The data also suggests that 57.6 million people in Bangladesh have good hygiene at home. Hygiene remains the immediate priority when extending access to sanitation facilities. Improved sanitation closes the gap between the richest and poorest.
