Safely Managed Toilets for a Better Tomorrow

Safely managed sanitation services are not shared with other households. These services hygienically separate human excreta and dispose of them in situ, or transport and treat them off-site.

JMP 2019 indicates that there is still a long way to go to achieve universal access to safely managed sanitation. Safely managed sanitation is a major focus of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Disposing faecal waste generated in rural and urban areas has become a major challenge for the authorities. One potential solution to this challenge is establishing faecal sludge treatment plants. Human excreta treated in these plants are then safe to be discharged into the environment or used as fertilizer. This process will reduce the environmental hazards and significant health risks associated with excreta coming into human contact.
